If you’ve just ordered new number plates from JDM Plates and want a clean, modern finish, you might be wondering how to fit them without using screws. Traditionally, a screw is used to attach a registration plate, but screwless options like adhesive pads or tape offer a neater alternative.

The good news? It’s simple, secure, and completely road-legal when done correctly. Whether you want to avoid drilling holes in your bumper or prefer a smoother look, there are several effective ways to attach your plates. From strong automotive tape to foam pads and reclosable fasteners, you can decide which method best suits your needs. Here’s how to do it step-by-step, with expert guidance from the team at JDM Plates.

Before You Start: Prep Is Everything

You’ll need (for all methods):

  • Mild car-safe cleaner or shampoo
  • Isopropyl alcohol (or panel wipe) + lint-free cloth
  • Soft plastic trim tool or dental floss (to remove old adhesive)
  • Microfibre towel
  • Masking tape (for alignment)
  • Dry, dust-free workspace (ideally above 15°C; no rain)

Prep steps (do these once):

  1. Remove old plate/residue If you’re replacing the old number plate with a new one, and the plate is taped on, warm the adhesive (hairdryer on low) to apply heat and help loosen it. Slide floss behind to lift, then gently pull the plate away, being careful not to damage the vehicle’s paintwork. Peel away the remaining foam with a trim tool. If needed, use the old number plate as a template for marking holes or alignment on the new plate.
  2. Clean the mounting area – Wash, dry, then wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol to remove wax/grease. Make sure to remove any dirt that may have built up behind the old plate. Do the same on the back of the number plate before fitting.
  3. Test the position – Dry-fit the plate; use two small pieces of masking tape as a temporary alignment guide so the final fit is level and centred.

When you’re replacing old plates, always remove the old number plates and any residue before fitting the new plates. Make sure the new number plate is attached using a secure method, such as high-quality adhesive pads or screws, and double-check that the registration number is displayed correctly and is easy to read from a distance of 20 meters.

By following the proper process for fitting number plates, removing the old plates, cleaning the area, and securely attaching the new plates. You’ll ensure your vehicle is compliant, your registration is clearly visible, and you’re protected from fines or other issues down the line. Always be careful and thorough during the fitting process to achieve a professional, secure finish.

Method 1: Automotive Double-Sided Tape (VHB-Style)

Best for: Maximum strength and a clean, floating look.
What you need: Automotive-grade acrylic foam tape (e.g., VHB-style, 12–20 mm strips).

Steps:

  1. Apply 3–5 vertical strips evenly across the back of the plate, staying 10–15 mm from the edges. Don’t bridge raised letters.
  2. Peel the tape liners, align the plate using your masking tape guides, and lightly touch the plate to the bumper.
  3. When you’re happy, press firmly from the centre outward for 30–60 seconds.
  4. Hold steady pressure (palms flat) for another 30 seconds.
  5. Leave to cure. Light rain is usually fine after a few hours, but avoid jet-wash for 24–48 hours.

Pros: Highest bond strength; OEM-style finish.
Watch-outs: Needs warm, dry conditions and good surface prep.

Method 2: Number Plate Foam Pads (Pre-Cut Adhesive Pads)

Best for: Quick DIY installs; perfect for flat mounting surfaces.
What you need: Automotive number plate sticky pads (usually 6–8 per plate).

Steps:

  1. Stick 6–8 pads to the back of the plate (top, middle, bottom rows).
  2. Remove liners, align carefully, and press the plate into place.
  3. Apply firm pressure across the surface for 60 seconds.

Pros: Fast, easy, no trimming; great initial tack.
Watch-outs: Choose quality automotive pads; avoid generic “household” foam pads.

Method 3: Reclosable Fasteners (3M™ Dual Lock™ / Heavy-Duty Velcro)

Best for: Plates you may want to remove (track days, detailing, ceramic coating).
What you need: Reclosable fastener strips rated for exterior/automotive use.

Steps:

  1. Cut 4–6 pairs of equal-sized strips. Stick one side to the bumper (cleaned area), the matching side to the plate.
  2. Press each strip firmly for 30 seconds to bond.
  3. Align and click the plate into place (you’ll feel it interlock).
  4. Remove by gently pulling from one corner when needed; re-seat by pressing evenly.

Pros: Strong hold + removable; great for detailers.
Watch-outs: Slightly increases standoff depth; make sure the plate sits flat and doesn’t flex.

Method 4: Adhesive-Mount Frames/Carriers (No Screws Into Plate)

Best for: Styling and easy swaps, without drilling the plate.
What you need: A low-profile plate frame designed to bond with tape or pads to the bumper (no visible screws).

Steps:

  1. Bond the frame to the bumper with VHB tape or foam pads as above.
  2. Clip or slide the plate into the frame as per the frame’s instructions.
  3. Check that no frame part obscures the characters, supplier mark/postcode, or BS code.

Pros: Super neat; plate removal without tools.
Watch-outs: Only use frames that don’t cover legal markings; ensure adequate drainage to avoid trapped moisture.

Troubleshooting & FAQs

My plate won’t stick. Why?

Usually contamination (wax, silicone) or low temperature. Re-wipe with alcohol, warm the area gently, and use fresh tape/pads.

Can I fit over existing tape?

No. Remove all old foam and adhesive, then clean thoroughly. Bonding over residue weakens the hold.

Will this pass an MOT?

Fixing method isn’t specified, security and legality are. Your plate must be secure, correctly spaced, reflective, and show the supplier and BS AU 145e mark.

Can I use magnets or suction cups?

We don’t recommend them for road use. They’re unreliable in wet/ cold conditions and can lead to loss of plate (and liability).
